Exercise, your brain and the sea squirt.
Sea squirts are common marine creatures but they have an amazing life story. A sea squirt begins life as a tadpole with a very basic brain which helps it to swim and find a site to attach itself to for the rest of its life.
As the tadpole swims it is able to produce a few more brain cells to help it with this major task. Once it finds its future home it attaches itself to a rock, a boat, a pier or even another creature. At that point its brain has done its job and is absorbed as food along with the gills and tail as the creature morphs into its ‘adult’ form.
What is of interest to us is that the tadpole makes new cells when it is swimming, When the swimming stops no more brain cells are produced.
Amazingly, recent research has shown that exercise can have a similar effect on our brains. fMRI scans have identified that exercise has a marked effect on reducing brain shrinkage and possibly reversing it. Another case of use it or lose it.
There are some amazing pictures of sea squirts available on line.
